It started as a whisper at the President's Picnic........
Let's have a ladies event.
Brigid McCarthy grabbed the ball and ran with it, her support crew downshifted and the wheels were in motion.
33 women in 21 cars, co-ordinated 4 departure points from Camden, Milton, Warrawong and Sylvania to converge on Kiama for the first inaugural "Women Behind the Wheel" event.
Sunny skies and dry conditions encouraged spirited driving, captured by Ian Fenn- our paparazzo on the highway.
At the Kiama Blowhole media from WIN News TV jostled to interview Brigid, while journos from the Kiama Bugle snapped photos of our gleaming MX5s. Perhaps they had heard Brigid's interview with ABC Radio Illawarra and couldn't resist a menagerie of miatas?
Our eye catching guest "Margot the Tarago" with Kylie Lalor at the purple crochet steering wheel took the fanfare in her stride, and will draw a crowd again when she drives from Adelaide to Perth via Uluru.... fundraising for the Cancer Council.
Zoom-zooming down the shaded winding road to the Joyce Wheatley Community Centre, where chef Cam Thomas from Central Park Cafe had a fabulous High Tea spread at the ready. Mazda Wollongong donated great raffle prizes. Funds were raised for Care Flight - $232, and $435 for the Cancer Council.
Rumour has it our youngest navigator, Mikaela, was so inspired by the ride in Mum, Jo Heaume's white NA, that Mikaela blitzed the Learner Driving test the following day.
2024 will see more Mazda MX5 Women Behind the Wheel events, so stay tuned.
We are on a roll!
