Sculptures in the Gardens
On Wednesday the 2nd of April a small group of us packed our chairs and lunch and ventured to the Wollongong Botanic Garden for a look at this year's Sculptures in the Gardens.
Wollongong Council puts on this display every 2 years, showcasing local and national artists competing in a number of areas.
The exhibition includes a $30,000 Wollongong Acquisitive Sculpture Prize, a $3,000 People's Choice Prize and for the first time in 2025, a $10,000 Ephemeral Prize. The winning sculpture becomes a permanent feature in the gardens.
This year's exhibits were interesting and varied, although I'm not sure how the washing will hold up to the Illawarra winds in the long term, if this exhibit happens to win (I Belong Under the Sun, You Belong Under the Sun).
We even had the pleasure of viewing exhibit #17, "Community Nesting" which displayed John and Chrissie Zaremba's house as a nesting box on a tree, each one highlighting an endangered bird species (Vote for this one, it will definitely last and who knows birds might make a home in one of them).
The exhibition is on throughout the month of April, grab your lunch and have a look, it's worth it just for a walk through the Gardens if nothing else, they are beautiful and definitely under utilised.
