MX-5 Cup Round 6 - Final Round & Championship Wrap
15 September 2019 / Story by Paul Nudd, Videos by Stuart McFadyen, David Lawler and Andy Boydell
Wakefield Park 15th September 2019.
Thirteen MX-5s entered for the day so we were combined this time with Ten Alfas to give a grid of twenty three.
Michael Hall had engine troubles on Saturday and was unable to make the grid.
Paul Nudd qualified but dropped out during the first Super TT race with electrical problems and did not get to any of the MX-5 races.
Sharing the track with the Alfas was not as comfortable as it was with the RX8 Cup cars at round 4. I won’t go into detail. Hopefully it will not be necessary next season. If we can get 16 MX-5s we can have the track to ourselves.
At the pointy end we had two turbo cars in the open class with Curran Brennan getting the jump from the start in the first two races and Tim Herring coming through to take the chequered flag. In the third race Tim got the jump and led for 4 laps then slowed and stopped, leaving it to Curran.
Class A was huge with 6 cars, just one turbo. Richard Herring nearly broke out in race 2 but dnf’d that race and didn’t start in race 3. Stuart McFadyan dominated Class A holding off a challenge from David Lawler in race 3.

Brilliant racing between Andy Boydell and Craig Barney with constant swapping places. Craig came out on top in all 3 races, in race 2 finishing overlapped (video below).
Just two in class B with Ian Combes a dnf in race 2 and dns in race 3 handing the class to Steven Head.
Rob Withers could not make this round, leaving it to Rob Herrick and Kerry Smith to fight it out for class C. Rob took the first two races with Kerry taking the third.
Round winner was Stuart McFadyen with second to Craig Barney and third was Steven Head.

From lapping Wakefield in 1:15 in Round 1 to 1:12 in round 5
Well done Rob Withers, our Rookie Of The Year!
Todd Herring
Todd Herring dominated The Cup in 2018 and 'moved up' to concentrate on Super TT racing for 2019 (and dominated that category this year). However Todd was intimately involved in The Cup this year supporting and helping brother Tim Herring and cousin Richard Herring as well as all of us racing MX-5s.
Todd embodies the Spirit of MX-5 Racing!
