Mid-week Pub Lunch - Goulburn via Crookwell
29 September 2022 / Peter & Annemie Wilson
The mid-week run was usually held on a Wednesday; however this time it was a Tuesday. Apparently that is not the preferred day for Members in the Chapter, or did they have more knowledge about the condition of the roads? Only three cars and four members met at the departure point.
It was a sunny spring morning in Canberra and the drive to Goulburn via Crookwell appeared to be an interesting run. The above average rainfall this year is becoming a problem for the roads in the district. Numerous potholes were encountered on the run from Sutton via Gundaroo, Gunning and Grabben Gullen to Crookwell. Some sections of the road were being excavated by a back hoe to repair the large potholes that required a little more than a bucket or two of bitumen. It was a matter of full concentration on the road ahead to avoid the larger potholes with those in the shade of the trees being a problem.
We arrived to a very sunny morning in Crookwell and enjoyed a coffee plus cakes and discussion about various topics at Matt’s Bakery.
The run to Goulburn was much better with the road via Pejar Dam in very good condition and the Wind Farms en route were silent due to the windless day.
Rather than a pub lunch, we opted for the Soldiers’ Club with a view over Belmore Park and a collection of A model Fords. We later discovered it was the 27th National Rally of A model Fords held between 13-17 September in Goulburn.
We had some discussion over lunch about the condition of the roads in the district and the plan to drive back via Range Road to Grabben Gullen, Gunning and Gundaroo to home. With consideration for the proverb, “discretion is the better part of valour”, we decided to take the pothole free Hume and Federal Highways for the drive home.
We arrived home at around mid-afternoon with 240kms on the trip meter. Thanks to all on the run, an enjoyable drive to test the reflexes!
