Hunter Run to Rylstone via Denman
03 June 2018 / Poem by Dianne Henderson
Rylstone via Denman
7 cars lined up at the Thornton starting post
With Andrew Digney as our host.
We were off to a solid start on our way to Denman.
Onto the Golden Highway 7 MX-5s in a row...you should have seen 'em.
Denman was the first stop for a wee break.
Coffee and car conversation we did partake.
"We'll take the tail-end" I said.
Not a wise decision considering what was ahead.
Onward and upward to the Bylong Valley Way.
Some of the most stunning scenery I would say.
Then horror oh horror we hit a dirt track
The Variety Bash cars caused a dust storm especially at the back.
Hendo was cursing because he'd just washed the car.
I could hear Ian groaning from afar.
Out of the dust storm and into the sun.
The car was filthy but boy was it fun.
Then another brief stop at the village of Bylong.
A village? A loose term as about 10 people strong.
Hendo had had enough at the back
So he rode shotgun with Andrew...how slack!
So I was the lonely tail-ender ... no worries, no stress!
Did I have fun? Hell yes!
Around the bends and over the hills
With Bohemian Rhapsody at 100 decibels!
Yet again horror oh horror roadworks we did find
I could feel Ian's fear from a car length behind.
Road base and water truck aren't a great mix.
To your car like concrete it all sticks.
Finally we arrived at Rylstone Pub
To partake of their fantastic grub.
Sunning ourselves in the back courtyard.
Life was sooo good and not at all hard.
The return trip was made in small groups at our own pace.
The solo lads burned off at a race.
We were the tortoises and they were the bunnies
You know how that turned out...it was very funny.
We passed them by as off to a "short-cut" they purred
Then over the radio through static we heard:
"Not sure if this is a road...I might have made a mistake I fear."
Cross-country onto a farm they had veered.
I heard the radio get clearer and clearer.
Then there was Andrew staring into our mirror.
So over we pulled, let them past and gave them a wave.
The bunnies beat the tortoises on this day.
The car is now back to its sparkling glory I can say.
It only took 3 washes and a new power spray.
Thank you to Andrew for a wonderful run!
We had a great day and loads of fun.
