CAMS announcement on frontal head restraints
13 March 2014 / David Lawler
CAMS have announced that an approved Frontal Head Restraint (FHR), such as a HANS device, would be required from July 2014 for some types of events. This applies to circuit race, road and off-road events at the state, national and international level, and comes into effect from July 2014 for national and international events, and from January 2015 for state events.
The full announcement is available from the CAMS web site

This CAMS mandate does not cover circuit based speed (ie non race) events, such as the NSW Supersprints and our club track days at Sydney Motor Sport Park. Also, events which are run under a AASA permit, such as our club track days at Wakefield Park, are not affected by this announcement.
While this announcement will only affect a few members of the MX-5 club, it does highlight the demonstrated life-saving potential of FHRs, and the inevitable move towards stricter requirements for better driver protection.
More information about the need for a FHR can be found on the AIMSS web site

The MX-5 Club of NSW recommends the use of a suitable FHR by all drivers who use a racing harness in speed events, such as track days, supersprints and MX-5 Cup races.
Peter Battisson of ACDC in Canberra is a Revolution Racegear distributor and a major sponsor and supporter of the MX-5 Club of NSW. He has offered a one-off group buy of HANS devices for club members, with a discount of up to 20%. The range of available HANS devices can be viewed on the Revolution Racegear web site.

Over the next few weeks, the MX-5 Club of NSW will provide more information about FHRs to members, as well as full details of the group buy offer from ACDC.
If you are participating in speed or race events while using a racing harness, please consider using a FHR.
