Geoff”s Berry Mountain Adventure
17 June, 2025
A near perfect early winter day for a tops down run in the sun around the twisty and mountainous roads of Berry Mountain and environs. Meeting at Cambewarra lookout it was once down the Berry mountain and once up Woodhill Mountain then a diversion through Kangaroo Valley, up Barrengarry Mountain and onto Robertson for lunch.
Everyone was on time arriving at Cambewarra lookout and were awaiting the opening of the cafe where we were looking forward to warming hot drinks and sustenance. The view from the lookout was clear today due to high winds. It was the best view up and down the coast we have seen for some time. The local wombat kept us entertained, just casually nibbling grass. Sufficiently replete and having warmed up we left on the first leg of our adventure which took us from Cambewarra Lookout towards Kangaroo Valley before making the turn to our next stop at Berry. This road has never been improved over the years with many lumps and bumps and more than a few potholes requiring attention. Arriving in Berry the first and only stop was at the Treat Factory, where the ladies of the group made the mandatory purchases.
The next leg of the adventure saw us completing a loop back to Berry via Coolangatta Road, Gerroa Road and Beach Road before turning onto Woodhill Mountain Road for a drive through the dairy country of the area…ooh, the aroma. All too soon we were back on Moss Vale Road heading to Kangaroo Valley, which seemed unusually quiet today. A brief stop for roadworks at historic Hampden Bridge slowed progress for a couple of minutes before we hit the climb up Barrengarry mountain where we had an unhindered run all the way. At Fitzroy Falls we turned onto Myra Vale Road where we encountered a red V8 Holden ute which attempted to join in with our convoy from a side road without looking…. great reflexes Bob…. not sure how you avoided him. Onwards to our destination at Robertson pub for lunch where everyone enjoyed the hearty fare and refreshment. After much convivial chatter it was soon time to say our farewells, with some people travelling home via Kangaroo Valley and Nowra, others opting to travel down Jamberoo Mountain Road and onto the freeway for the run home. Thanks Geoff for organising today’s outing.
