The final round of the MX-5 Club of NSW Sprint Championship — which also counted as Round 6 of the CSCA Supersprint Series — was hosted by the Jaguar Drivers Club of Australia at Sydney Motorsport Park’s Druitt Circuit on Sunday 20 October 2025. This marked the first time our club has used the Druitt layout for one of our track days. With its long, fast straights punctuated by a few brief technical sections, it’s not exactly the most MX-5-friendly configuration — but it certainly provided plenty of challenges (and fun!) for our drivers.
A strong field of 26 MX-5 Club members joined 74 entrants overall, making for a busy and exciting day. The Jaguar Club organisers were delighted to have our support, helping make the event both successful and financially viable.
We couldn’t have asked for better weather: a clear spring day that started cool and crisp before warming nicely as the sessions went on. The quickest times were set early—at least for those lucky enough to avoid red flags and fluid spills interrupting their runs.
As always, the CSCA Supersprint field was full of fascinating machinery. Among the highlights was Mark Hurst from the Triumph Sports Owners Association, piloting a genuine 1965 Brabham BT14 Formula Libre racecar — one of only ten ever built! Mark was having a great time reacquainting himself with the car after a major rebuild, until a sheared gear selector rod forced an early retirement. He certainly deserved admiration for mixing it with much larger cars — his Brabham made the MX-5s look enormous by comparison!
The paddock was a treat too, with an impressive display of classic Jaguars, mainly XJs that looked straight out of Minder. There were also a few elegant Mark 2s and a stunning E-Type that drew plenty of admiring looks. The final run of the day was reserved for the Jaguars, and hearing them fly through Turn 1 in formation sounded like a squadron of Spitfires. Adding to the variety, a BMW 2002 tii went door-to-door with a Ford Escort Twin Cam — proof that diversity really is the spice of life on the track!
The outright fastest time went to Adam Single from MG Car Club Newcastle, who clocked an impressive 1:06.0947 in his Williams Sport Racer, nearly three seconds ahead of the next closest competitor. Leading the MX-5 brigade was Ralph Thompson in his Open Class NC, setting a superb 1:11.8878 to keep the Lotus drivers honest. Ian Spinks followed in his Open Class ND with a 1:14.1558, and Luke Kovacic wasn’t far behind in his dad’s lightly modified 30th Anniversary ND, posting 1:14.4623.

In the MX-5 Club Sprint Championship, the day’s top scorer was Bryan Shedden, achieving 98.19% in the Standard Class. He was followed closely by a pair of young guns Tyler Schaafsma (96.99%, Clubman Class) and Kyle Robinson (95.80%, Modified Class). In fact, five more drivers scored in the 95s including Ian Spinks (95.61%, Open Class) — a testament to how close and competitive this year’s series has been! Interestingly, Bryan, Tyler, and Kyle all shared a garage for the day — clearly, there was something lucky about that spot! In the non-MX-5 class, David Phillips recorded the quickest time of 1:15.637 in his Toyota GR Yaris.

2025 Sprint Championship
This year’s championship was one of the most diverse we’ve ever run, thanks to our participation in the CSCA Supersprint series. Across five rounds, we competed on SMSP Amaroo (twice), SMSP Gardner/GP, SMSP Druitt, and enjoyed a welcome return to One Raceway (formerly Wakefield Park).
Congratulations to all competitors and class winners — what a fantastic season! Here’s to even more great racing, camaraderie, and MX-5 spirit in 2026.
