Guidelines for Classic Vehicle Registration
What is a Classic Vehicle?
To apply for registration under the Classic Vehicle Scheme (CVS), you must be a full member of the Mazda MX-5 Club of NSW for the duration of your period of registration.
Like Historic Vehicle Registration, Classic Vehicle Registration is mainly for operators who only drive their vehicles occasionally (see link for an explanation of what occasionally means). If you drive your classic vehicle regularly, consider applying for standard registration.
For information about the Classic Vehicle Registration scheme, please refer to: TfNSW - Registering and Using a Classic Vehicle
Classic vehicles are 30 years of age or older that have certain modifications not permitted under the Historic Vehicle Scheme (HVS). Vehicles which are eligible to be registered under the HVS can also be registered under the CVS.
These modifications may be owner modified or significantly modified. If significantly modified, they must have a valid compliance certificate issued by a licensed certifier.
Is my MX-5 eligible for Classic Registration?
To be eligible for the CVS:
- your vehicle must be at least 30 years of age or older from the year it was manufactured.
- your vehicle must comply with the applicable vehicle standards as at the date of vehicle manufacture.
- you must be a financial member of a Transport for NSW-recognised historic vehicle club in this case the MX-5 Club of NSW. Membership information is available here.
NOTE:
- If you change clubs during your registration period you need to fill out a TfNSW Classic Vehicle Declaration Form 1835 (PDF 298.48KB) and get it signed by your new club. Take it to a service centre to get a replacement Certificate of Approved Operations.
- If you become unfinancial with the MX-5 Club of NSW and have not transferred your Classic Registration to another club, your car will no longer be legally registered, and hence your insurance will also be invalid.
Steps in the Application Process
- Obtain a blue slip from an Authorised Inspection station (AIS) to establish the road worthiness of the vehicle. If the vehicle is significantly modified you will need to obtain a Vehicle Safety Compliance Certificate of Safety.

- Proof of registration entitlement – such as an original receipt for the vehicle showing buyer’s name, seller’s name, address, signature, the vehicle identification number (VIN) or chassis/frame or serial number and the date of acquisition). Generally the current Certificate of Registration is acceptable.

Approval from the Council of Motor Clubs Inc.
The CMC is the approved organisation for CVS registrations. Once the MX-5 Club Scheme Administrator receives your application by mail, they will stamp your Classic Vehicle Declaration to evidence that you are a financial member of the Club and mail it to the CMC. The CMC will then stamp the document as the Club’s approved organisation.
YOU MUST PAY THE CMC’s FEE ($25) before they will stamp your declaration. You can pay the fee through direct deposit to:
CMC CVS
BSB 633 000
Account No. 186322772
Please identify the payment in the reference field with a surname and initials
Once stamped, the CMC will return the original stamped Declaration form to you.
Once received you must take these forms to TfNSW to complete the process. Note that you should ensure that when attending the Service NSW you insist that they look at the Classic Vehicle Scheme. If they incorrectly look at the Historical Vehicle Scheme they will not correctly process your registration. Any Classic number plates provided should end with an E. At present they are white plates with green numbers.
Once the vehicle has been accepted for CVS by TfNSW, you must notify the Scheme Administrator with the new CVS number plate and Log Book Reference number through the club email – historic.mx5nsw@gmail.com. You must also send this information to the CMC to terry@ttpm.net.au.
When can classic vehicles be used?
If your vehicle has Classic Vehicle Registration, it can only be used:
- for events organised by primary clubs affiliated with Transport for NSW approved organisations. Our events are listed here.
- for events organised by community organisations if an official invitation is received and recorded by the primary club in the official minutes or 'Day Book'
- for short journeys to service and inspect the vehicle from your place of garaging
- on longer journeys if you notify your primary club and the details are recorded in the primary club's official minutes.
Classic vehicle log books
If you record your vehicle use in a Classic Vehicle Log Book, you can drive your registered vehicle for up to 60 days each year outside of organised club events. Find out more about historic and classic vehicle log books.
