The Polar Bear Express

The sky was still dark as we gathered in the Hungry Jack’s carpark at Hayward’s Bay, engines humming, blankets, beanies and scarves wrapped tight. It was 6:00am, just before first light, and the chill hung heavy in the air. The Polar Bear Express was about to begin. We hit the road at twilight, 16 cars strong, carrying 29 members and visitors on an unforgettable winter run. As we climbed the bends of Macquarie Pass, the horizon began to glow. The sun slowly rose around us, casting golden light across the frozen Highlands.
Temperatures dipped to a crisp -3°C, with frost clinging to fences and mist rolling through open paddocks. But nothing could dampen our spirits. With heaters and seat warmers working overtime, we cruised through the Southern Highlands, bundled up and smiling.
Our destination: Tattersalls Hotel in Goulburn.
By the time we pulled in, we were frozen but happy - and we were joined in the carpark by another member who had driven in from Canberra to meet us.
Inside the hotel, we defrosted beside a cushy fireplace, warming up with steaming mugs of tea, coffee, and hot chocolate, and a delicious hot breakfast that truly hit the spot.
And the best part? Our chilly adventure raised $150 for CareFlight, supporting their lifesaving work. The Polar Bear Express was more than just a drive - it was a heartwarming (and finger-freezing) morning shared with great people, good cause, and breathtaking scenery.
