President's Picnic via the Putty Road

01 October 2024

Three MX5s and six North Coast Chapter members, Kev and Jen Chappell, Cath and Graham Dickey and Rosy Black and Ken Bailey met at Mount Thorley around lunch time on Friday 20 September. From there we enjoyed a few twists and turns along the scenic Putty Road through the national parks and along the creek. A short stop for lunch at the Grey Gum Cafe. A few roadworks held us up a bit but we arrived at the Mecure Hotel at Rouse Hill late afternoon. That evening we enjoyed dinner at the Fiddler’s Restaurant complex though it was a bit noisy next to the playground! Saturday morning Ken and Rosy were up bright and early to start their volunteering at the Picnic that is held annually at the Ebenezer Church. The church is the oldest Presbyterian church in Australia, built in 1809. It’s a beautiful sandstone building and the location is very scenic next to the Hawkesbury River.

Rosy helped out with the registration desk, selling raffle tickets and checking on the tea station, while Ken assisted with the car parking. Most people had arrived by mid-morning and by then the sun was shining and it was great weather for the event. Morning tea was provided and then we enjoyed a BBQ lunch, made and served by the local church auxiliary. Some fun games ( such as nut on a spanner aka egg and spoon race!) were held after lunch. Many members entered the various car categories, Historic, Show ‘Shine, Modified MX5, Track Cars, Ladies’ Choice and People’s Choice/Best in the Show. We all voted for the People’s Choice/Best in the Show and judging followed.

Early afternoon we all gathered near the church to see the presentation of the trophies and awards. Our Chapter did really well with Kev winning the Historic category and the People’s Choice/Best in the Show!! He has a beautiful racing green NA that he found hidden away in a barn some years ago. It was the talk of the show! Jen also did very well winning three prizes in the raffle. The Club raised $2,438 for Careflight. In the evening we celebrated Kev’s wins over dinner. On Sunday we enjoyed a cooked breakfast together before heading off to our various destinations. A great weekend was had by all ! Thanks to Kev for organising the run.
