MX-5 Cup - Round 3
The MX-5 Cup is a race series for MX-5s. MX-5 Cup races are run as part of MRA (Motor Racing Australia) events. In 2026, MRA has moved to Motorsport Australia permits, so an MA race licence will be required. Under Motorsport Australia rules, anyone who is a member of a Motorsport Australia affiliated club can enter MX-5 Cup races, provided that they are competing in an eligible MX-5 (needs to comply with the technical regulations). Competing drivers also need to abide by the driving standards and other relevant regulations for the MX-5 Cup. Only MX-5 Club members can accumulate points in the MX-5 Cup championship however.
The MX-5 Cup is intended as a safe and fun competition, particularly suitable as the first racing experience for drivers coming from track days or supersprints.
The MX-5 Cup is run under a strict code of conduct that lays down driving standards that we expect from competitors, which makes it suitable for drivers moving up from Supersprints.
The MX-5 Cup is organised into four technical categories - unlike previous championships, the 2026 championship is no longer based on time categories. For an explanation of the new 2026 classes see here.
MX-5 Cup races are held at events organised by Motor Racing Australia (MRA) https://motorrace.com.au/events/.
MRA MX-5 Cup race meetings are now held under Motorsport Australia permits, so drivers must hold a Motorsport Australia race licence, and their cars must comply with Motorsport Australia safety standards for race events.
An important distinction to bear in mind is that the MX-5 Club of NSW organises the category (the MX-5 Cup), but we do not run the events – MRA do. To enter the MX-5 Cup, you need to enter that category on the relevant website and pay the entry fee to MRA. Registering for the MX-5 Cup series, is not entering the event!
Registration for the series in 2026 is now free, but you must still register. If you are an MX-5 Club member, this entitles you to compete for trophies in the MX-5 Cup championship which is normally conducted over 6 rounds.
