Lake Burley Griffin Cruise
Run Details
You can choose to come for one or two nights on this run.
Wednesday 8th October
We will meet at Coffee on the Double, within Schutz landscape & garden, at 8:15am for an early coffee, and depart there at 8:45am to route to Canberra via Nerriga and Tarago, with a comfort break at Tarago if required.
Late morning coffee will be at ‘The Gathering’ in Bungendore (Unit 1/12 Gibraltar Street, Bungendore) at 10:45, to leave again by 11:30.
We will then route through Queanbeyan to Capital Brewing at Fyshwick, arriving at about 12:15, (3/1 Dairy Road, Fyshwick) for some lunch and a local ale, before leaving at about 13:45 for the short drive to the hotel.
Rooms have been set aside at The Knightsbridge Hotel, Old Kingston (3 Leichhardt Street, Kingston).
Please phone the hotel directly on 02 6185 0000 to book your room, stating you are with the South Coast MX-5 Club, and quoting code KVIP8. The agreed rates are $207 per night for a superior room, and $215 per night for an Executive room. The hotel has a secure underground car park.
After checking in, we will head down to Kingston Foreshore for a 2hr cruise on Lake Burley Griffin with Love Boats Canberra. Depending on numbers this will be on a large cruise boat for us all, or self-drive electric boats (which are easy to operate and great fun!) which hold 10 persons each. We will have the option to take drinks / snacks onboard. Expect cost to be approx. $20 a head.
The embarkation point is an easy 1.1km / 15min Walk from the hotel, or you can drive and park at the foreshore.
We disembark at about 5:00pm, and go back to the hotel to freshen up, ready to head out to dinner.
Dinner has been booked for 7:00pm at ‘Maddies’, part of the Kingston Hotel (73 Canberra Avenue, Griffith) a short 350m / 5min walk from the hotel.
Thursday 9th October
For those who want breakfast, there are many cafes close by in Old Kingston, only a couple of minutes’ walk away.
Those who only wanted one night away can then check out of the hotel, and enjoy some of the suggestions below, before heading back to the coast.
For those in for the second night, it will be as follows:
We will leave the hotel at 8:15am to drive to ‘The Gathering’ at Hall (30min drive) to meet with the Canberra chapter to join in with their run ‘Pies in Harden’. This run will take us up to Young before heading to Harden for lunch. The day will have us driving for about 3-4 hours, and we should be back at the hotel late afternoon. PLEASE BOOK DIRECTLY ON THE CANBERRA CHAPTER EVENTS PAGE TO REGISTER YOUR ATTENDANCE.
There will follow a bit of self-time, before meeting again at 6:00pm at ‘Snapper & Co’, which is a fish and chip restaurant attached to the Southern Cross Yacht Club. (Mariner Place, Yarralumba) This is a 10min drive from the hotel, or if you prefer an easy Uber ride. (parking can be difficult).
For those looking to continue the social evening after returning to the hotel, we suggest ‘Public’ in Manuka, and great hotel only 800m / 12min walk from the hotel.
Friday 10th October
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast in Kingston or Manuka and be ready to check out at 10:00am.
Canberra has many varied options for the morning, and a few suggestions are:
- Visit Parliament House, and have lunch in the Terrace Café
- Visit Old Parliament House
- Walk the central basin (5km loop) to walk off the previous two days excesses!
- Visit the many galleries / museums Canberra has to offer
- Wine tasting / Tapas at Contentious Character Cellar door in Fyshwick
We will head our separate ways home, but for those who route back the way we came, try the Chubby Cat Café at Tarago for lunch.
